CENTENARY DINNER
Brighton Union's Centenary Dinner
was held on March the 29th at the Melbourne Cricket
Club (MCG). An amazing event was organized and all of the 200
odd attendees were treated to a magical night hosted by
Victorian Legend cricketer Darren Berry and featuring a host of
guest speakers.
The night culminated in the naming of the Brighton Union team of the century. Click below to see more detailed information on the full team selected. Brighton Union CC Team of the Century Throughout the night the crowd were treated to an amazing 4 course dinner and luxuriated in the surrounds of Australia Home of Cricket, a fitting place to celebrate this fantastic club and it's first 100 years. An array of memorable photos were flashed across the many screens in the dining area which brought about many touching applauses (for dearly departed the likes of the much loved Jack Vollugi & John Egan) cheers, jeers (when Big Al had hair) and laughs (again usually at Big Al's expense). Con Pothitos wins Knight Sport Award
1st XI Captain Con Pothitos was awarded with the Longmuir Shield's highest individual honour by winning the Knight Sports player of the year for 2007/2008. Con had a very consistent year with the bat and polled well with the umpires to take away the award. Con was joined by Ivan Delac in the CMCA best XI.

THE CHAMP HANGS UP THE BOOTS After a stellar career with Brighton Union spanning 353 games and 32 seasons, Con Gorozidis has finally declared his innings closed. Con joined the club in 1974 as a 13 year old and from the earliest days was it was obvious he was an immensely talented player. At the age of 14 he displayed great maturity to steer the 4th XI to victory, scoring 80 in a grand final that was slipping away, and rapidly progressed to the 1st XI, where he soon became an automatic selection. An intimidating opening bowler, some of Con’s greatest moments have been with the ball – a marathon 9/140 off 54 overs in the 1982-83 final against arch-rivals East Sandringham (Union won by 2 runs) and 10/68 against Hampton United in a remarkable tied game in 1990-91. Throughout the 1990/91 season, he and Michael Cordwell were a devastating new-ball combination, taking a combined 100 wickets to virtually bowl Union to the premiership. In the 1992-93 semi-final against Bentleigh Uniting Con was dismissed cheaply but was so determined to contribute he bowled 44 overs unchanged at one end, taking 5/59, and was so exhausted at the end he virtually had to be carried off. Brighton Union coach Alex Gerdan described him as “the ultimate competitor”. His 630 1st XI wickets is the highest tally for the club that can be documented. As well as being a great bowler, Con has been a spectacular and prolific batsman. His six-hitting feats at Hurlingham Park are legendary, with some enormous hits sailing over 150 metres into the adjacent kindergarten and blocks of flats. His best year with the bat was 1983-84, when he made 842 runs and took 38 wickets but was struck down with a serious knee injury at football training and missed out on playing in back-to-back premiership wins. While age and injury curtailed his bowling in the late 1990s, Con continued to turn it on with the bat. In Rd 1 of the 2003-04 season he smashed a typically brutal 130 before being runout attempting an ambitious second run. Coming in at 3/2, he made 117 of the first 100 runs scored, and in true Con style had not picked up a bat since the end of the previous season.
In a rain-shortened semi-final against Omega in 2005-06, he blasted a brilliant match-winning 52 in only 19 balls (6 sixes, including 2 that went over the Bricker Pavilion into the athletics track behind). In a great career Con has made 11 centuries in the 1st XI, scored nearly 10,500 runs (double the next highest 1st XI runs scorer Danny Frew), and has played 323 1st XI games, easily a club record. A Life-member, 16 time Senior Club Champion, 5 times a premiership player, dual premiership captain/coach, winner of CMCA batting and bowling awards, 3 times winner of the Knights Sportsgoods Award as CMCA player of the year, the man known throughout the CMCA as “The Champ” has done it all. Long-serving club secretary Noel Pullen commented “There will never be another one as good as him in the parks in a hundred years”. Without doubt Con could have played cricket at first-class level had he wished. On behalf of all club members past and present, we congratulate Con on his magnificent contribution to local cricket. Thanks for the memories.
