Brighton Union Cricket Club’s history is one of remarkable successes and forgotten failures, of fighting spirit, true sportsmanship, and a determination to succeed even after bitter disappointments, all fostered no doubt from its early years of its existence.

 

In early 1906 a social group known as the “Odd Stocking Push” played a social match against the New Marylebone social cricket club at Primrose Hill, just north of St. Finbars Church in Centre Road, East Brighton, and this historic match, the result is not known, led to the creation of Brighton Union Cricket Club.

 

The Annual General Meeting of the New Marylebone Cricket Club was held on 23 September 1907 at St. Marks School Hall in Union Street East Brighton.

 

Little is known of the origins of the New Marylebone Cricket Club but players from the match between the “Odd Stocking Push” and the New Marylebone Cricket Club in early 1906 were present at this meeting.

 

On 1 October 1907 it was decided that the club’s name would be changed from the New Marylebone Cricket Club to the Brighton Union Cricket Club and the colours will be Green and Gold.

 

Since 1907 Brighton Union Cricket Club has made its home at Hurlingham Park. How different it is now to when the Club first used the ground more than 100 years ago.

 

Since then, the club has won 73 Premierships (26 first eleven ones) including the top division of the local South East Cricket Associations Longmuir Shield in 2022/23 and now has four senior sides and 10 junior teams, and welcomes new players and members. The Club has a number of top-level cricket coaches and special programs for underage players.

 

The club has produced many top-level cricketers, including Australian Test Cricketers, Julien Wiener and Simon Davis and Victorian captain Nick Jewell.

 

The club has entered a partnership relationship with the former Moorabbin West Cricket Club and the arrangement is going from strength to strength.
